20-017 Testing cooling system for leaks
Operation no. of operation texts and work units or standard texts and flat rates |
A. Model 463
Cap | open in stages to release pressure and then remove. Do not open the cap unless the coolant temperature is below 90 °C. |
Coolant level | should extend up to the mark on the expansion reservoir. |
Heater switches | set to maximum heating capacity. |
Tester | special tool 124 589 15 21 00, attach to expansion reservoir and pressurize cooling system with the pressure of about 1.4 bar. Inspect all the cooling and heating hoses and connection points for loss of coolant. Inspect condition of hose clips and re-tighten, if necessary. |
Special tool
124 589 15 21 00
Commercially available tools and testers
Designation | e.g. make Order no. |
Wrench hexagon with flexible | Hazet 6 mm 426-6 |
Testing for leaks
1 Turn cap as far as the 1st detent and release the pressure, then turn onto the 2nd detent and remove cap.
P20.30-0228-13
Do not open the cap unless the coolant temperature is below 90 °C.
2 The coolant level should extend up to the marking provided on the expansion reservoir (arrow).
P20.30-0229-13
3 Use tester 124 589 15 21 00 to pressurize the cooling system (pay attention to code number on cap).
Example: code number 140 = 1.4 bar.
4 Inspect all the cooling and heating water hoses and the connection points for loss of coolant.
Inspect the condition of the hose clips and ensure they are correctly tightened, replace or tighten if necessary.
B. Model 461
Cap | open in stages to release pressure and then remove. Do not open the cap unless the coolant temperature is below 90 °C. |
Coolant level | should extend up to the mark in the radiator. |
Heater switches | set to maximum heating capacity. |
Tester | special tool 124 589 15 21 00, attach to radiator and pressurize cooling system to about 1.0 bar. Inspect all the cooling and heating hoses and connection points for loss of coolant. Inspect condition of hose clips, tighten if necessary. |

Testing for leaks
1 Turn cap to the 1st detent and release pressure, then turn onto 2nd detent and remove cap.
P20-2080-13
Do not open the cap unless the coolant temperature is below 90 °C.
2 Fill coolant up to the marking.
P20.20-0212-13
3 Use the tester 124 589 15 21 00 to pressurize cooling system (pay attention to code number on cap).
Example: code number 100 = 1.0 bar.
4 Inspect all the cooling and heating water hoses and the connection points for loss of coolant.
Inspect the condition of the hose clips and ensure they are correctly tightened, replace or tighten if necessary.
