Notes on repairing the stationary heater

 Warning

Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Release pressure in coolant circuit

 To do so, turn cap of coolant expansion reservoir to detent position 1.

Remove engine compartment cover with air intake hoses

Remove front engine compartment paneling

 Unscrew exhaust duct from engine compartment lining.

Disconnect exhaust gas line (14) from heater (A6)

Clamp off coolant feed and coolant outlet hose (4, 3)

Disconnect fuel line (7) from fuel hose (7b)

 Collect escaping fuel.

Unclip water separator (12a) from holder (12b) and unscrew from combustion air intake hose (12)

Disconnect rubberized pipe clamp from coolant pump holder (11c)

 The coolant pump (A6m1) is only connected via the coolant hose (4).

Loosen nuts on stud bolts (6, 6b)

 Two nuts on holder at top and one nut on holder at bottom.

Guide heater (A6) out in upward direction and, when doing so, detach couplings (9, 10) of electrical connection lines

Disconnect coolant hoses (4, 3) from heater (A6) and coolant pump (A6m1)

 Mark coolant hose for installation. Collect escaping coolant in a clean vessel and, after installation, pour back into coolant expansion reservoir.

 

Disassemble/assemble

Disconnect coolant pump (A6m1) from heater (A6)

 Installation: Attach cover with straight inlet fitting to coolant pump.

Unscrew both long stud bolts (6) and short stud bolt (6b) from heater (A6)

Install in the reverse order

Check fuse assignment of heater (A6) on left in engine compartment

Risk of explosion caused by fuel vapors igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling combustible gases and risk of injury caused by burns during and after operation of heater unit

Do not operate stationary heater, auxiliary heater or engine with heater booster in closed rooms or when refueling. Allow heater unit to cool down after operation and wear protective gloves.
