Danger!

Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Switch off ignition

The vehicle must be horizontal and the retarder oil must be at operating temperature for checking the oil level.

Detach the engine compartment paneling under the transmission

Remove bolt and washer assembly (2).

Remove valve cover (3)

Slide extractor (5) in until it engages on the check valve (outlet) (1).

Pull check valve (outlet) (1) out of retarder housing

Remove round-section sealing rings (4)

Install check valve (outlet) (1)

Check rubber lining of valve disk for signs of wear and damage.

Check bore or sleeve for signs of wear and out-of-roundness.

Press valve disk in up to end stop and check guide piston for signs of wear.

If damaged or worn, install a new check valve (outlet) (1).

Install check valve (outlet) (1)

Observe installation position.

Pull on new round-section sealing rings.

Use suitable tool to press check valve (outlet) into retarder housing.

Install engine compartment paneling below transmission

Conduct a road test

Bleed retarder:

-If present and possible, switch off retarder foot control.

-Drive vehicle at 50 km/h.

-Switch on retarder in first brake stage 5 times for approx. 5 seconds each.
