Remove both rear axle shafts (7)

Drain oil from rear axle differential

Remove propeller shaft at joint flange (3)

Spin joint flange (3) by hand and check axial play of bearing

 The bearing must be free of play!

If there is play or if there are particles (shavings) in the drained oil, replace the gear set and the bearing in the rear axle differential:



Remove and install drive pinion and ring gear with differential

Determine friction torque on joint flange (3) of drive pinion and note down

 Determine friction value at a speed of approx. 50 rpm.

If after the initial torque of the collar nut (1) there is still play in the bearing of the drive pinion or the friction torque after the adjustment is not 0.1 to 0.2 Nm above the value noted previously, the compression ring must be replaced. Never correct friction torque by turning back collar nut (1):



Remove/install drive pinion and crown wheel with differential.
