1 Fit input shaft, main shaft and countershaft together and place mounting plate (1) on input shaft and countershaft.

Countershaft with dia. 25 mm: Use assembly plate 210 589 01 31 00.

Countershaft with dia. 32 mm: Use assembly plate 716 589 00 31 00.

2 Clamp input shaft, main shaft and countershaft with assembly plate (1) in vise.

3 Place shift unit (2) in position.

All shift forks must engage in the corresponding shift sleeves (arrows).

4 Apply oil to bearing of countershaft (6) in rear section of transmission housing (3).

5 Place rear section of transmission housing (3) on main shaft and countershaft (6).

On vans with transmission 716.643 and on passenger cars with transmission 716.6 with Sequentronic automated manual transmission (SEQ), code 424.

Push shift shaft for reverse gear in direction of main shaft through sensor opening in housing (arrow) so that shift shaft can be guided into bearing bore.

The main shaft, countershaft (6) and the two shift shafts must locate in the corresponding bearing bores.

6 Then check with a torch whether the reverse gear (4) engages in the reverse gear idler gear (5) and in the teeth on the countershaft (6).

7 Place short insertion sleeve (7) on main shaft, place old collar nut (8) in position and screw on up to end of thread on main shaft.

The collar nut and insertion sleeves must be oiled.

The main shaft and countershaft must be locked in position using a plastic wedge.

Make sure that the four guide sleeves of the shift unit move into the holes of the rear section of the transmission housing.

Repeat this operation step using different insertion sleeves until the rear section of the transmission housing is fully pressed onto the main shaft.

8 Unscrew the old collar nut (8) and remove the installation sleeves.

9 Take rear section of transmission housing with input shaft, main shaft and countershaft (6) out of vise.

10 Secure shift unit (2) using four bolts (9).

11 Remove mounting plate (1).

12.1 Insert main shifter shaft (11) into shift unit (2).
