Remove/install

Remove front cover on cylinder head

Place piston of cylinder 1 on 30° after top dead center

Crank engine at crankshaft.

 At 30° after top dead center of cylinder 1, camshafts (77) and (78) can be turned without valves touching piston crowns.

Mark camshaft sprockets (75) and (76) and timing chain (73) relative to each other using color coding (arrows).

 Installation: Make sure that the markings on timing chain match the markings on camshaft sprockets



Remove chain tensioner (14)

If the entire chain tensioner is released,
it must be removed, disassembled and reassembled as described.

Remove exhaust camshaft sprocket (76)


Replace bolts of camshaft sprocket,
do not reuse

 Installation: Install exhaust camshaft sprocket (76) with mounted timing chain (73)

 Bolt, camshaft sprocket/stub shaft

Detach timing chain (73) from intake camshaft sprocket (75).

Turn camshafts (77) and (78) free of tension using key (1)


Camshafts are fragile.
Therefore turn camshafts until base circles of cams are making as much contact as possible with compensating elements (camshafts in camshaft bearings free of tension).

 Double open end wrench

Unscrew camshaft bearing cap

 Installation:
Attach camshaft bearing cap
at same location.

 Torx bit set

Remove camshafts (77) and (78)

Camshaft code number and assignment

 Installation: Lubricate compensation elements and camshaft bearing points.
Place camshafts (77) and (78) in bearing points such that base circles are making as much contact as possible with bucket tappets.
Observe camshaft assignment 
