Notes on coolant | |||
Warning | Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
1 | Turn off ignition | ||
Warning | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure it with the safety strut.
Notes on tilting the cab
2 | Tilt the cabin | ||
3 | Remove the acoustic encapsulation of the chassis on the left- and right-hand sides
4 | Partially drain the coolant from the radiator
5 | Remove the exhaust manifold |
| |
Vehicles with CODE (MZ4) Turbobrake
6 | Remove the coolant venting pipe (4) from all the heads (1) | Displace sidewards the coolant venting piping (4).
7 | Remove the clamp (12) of the constant throttle line (2) from the rear suspension eyelet (17)
8 | Remove the constant throttle line (2) from the connection nozzle
9 | Remove the pressure line (15) and coolant line (16) clamps (14) from the rear suspension eyelet (17) | Only for vehicles with CODE (MS4) BlueTec 4 or CODE (MS5) BlueTec 5, if the cylinder head (1) of sixth cylinder has been removed.
10 | Loosen the screws (13) on the rear lifting eyelet (17) and displace it from the cylinder head (1) so that the angle piece (arrow) does not press the cylinder head (1) anymore | Only for vehicles with CODE (MS4) BlueTec 4 or CODE (MS5) BlueTec 5, if the cylinder head (1) of sixty cylinder has been removed .
Do not bend or damage the pipings installed at the rear lifting eyelet (17)
11 | Remove the constant throttle (3) line from all heads (1)
12 | Remove the intake manifold
13 | Remove the injection line of the cylinder head (1) in question
14 | Remove the fuel draining (8) line of the head (1) in question | Additionally, remove the fuel draining line (8) of the cylinder head above and set aside the fuel draining line (8).
15 | Remove the cover of the cylinder head cap from the head in question (1)
16 | Remove the rocker mechanism (6) from the head in question (1)
17 | Lift out the valve bridges (7)
18 | Remove the tappets stem (9)
19 | Loosen the cylinder head bolts (5) and remove the head (1) | Set the cylinder head (1) aside so that the integrated nozzle holder combination is not damaged.
20 | Remove the head gasket (10)
21 | Clean the head (1) | When cleaning, only scrape the sealing surface of the head.
22 | Plug all holes in the partitioning surface of the engine block with own-manufacturing plugs
| Stop plugs for closing off bores | ||
| Check | ||
23 | Check the sealing surface of the cylinder head, as well as the cylinder head gasket (10) for cracks and damage
If the cylinder head gasket (10) is leaking, it should be replaced.

Engine 460.984 in model 934.241/251 #R
If the cylinder head (1) is deformed:
| |||
Check/face-grind cylinder head contact surfaces
Flatten the partitioning surface when the cylinder head (1) has not undergone inductive hardening. We recommend, however, that a new cylinder head (1) with inductive hardening is installed.
24 | Clean and check the partitioning surface of the engine block | Avoid the penetration of impurities into the motor oil holes, coolant, tappet rods (9), cylinder head screws (5) as well as the cylinder liners, otherwise the engine could be damaged.
Gasket and paint residues on the partitioning surface should only be scraped.
25 | Check the screws of the head (5) | If the maximum length of the rod (L) is exceeded, the corresponding screw of the head (5) should be replaced.
Cylinder head bolts | |||
26 | Visually inspect the tappet rods (9) | In case of deformation or damage to the tray or the spherical head, the corresponding tappet rod (9) should be replaced.
| Install | ||
27 | Carefully remove the plugs closing all holes of the engine block
28 | Place a new cylinder head gasket (10) above the centering sleeves (11) on the crankcase separating surface | Observe the mounting position of the head gasket (10).
29 | Place the cylinder head (1) on the centering sleeves (11) on the head gasket (10)
30 | Tighten the screws of the head (1)
Note instructions for tightening the cylinder head bolts (5).
Lubricate the contact surface, threads and rods of the cylinder head screws (5) with motor oil.
