Air conditioning system - function check

Inspect

 Danger!

Risk of accident as vehicle may start off by itself with the engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in contusions and burns

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

Function check of air conditioning for its cooling capacity is only possible if the temperature in the passenger compartment is above 17 °C

Start engine

 Coolant temperature of min. 50 °C must be ensured.

Turn blower rotary switch (1) to stage 1

Press AC operation switch (3)

The AC indicator lamp (2) must illuminate.

 A temperature control by the roof AC is only ensured if the AC operation switch (3) is pressed.



Check refrigerant compressor

Turn rotary knob (6) for "Passenger compartment temperature" to the left as far as possible

Open tailgate at rear

Perform visual inspection of refrigerant compressor

 If the engine is running and the air conditioning is switched on, the hub (7) must rotate.



Check condenser blower

Perform visual inspection of condenser blowers (arrows)

 For operations in the roof area, the accident prevention regulations must be observed

 The condenser blowers (arrows) must rotate when the air conditioning is switched on.



Check passenger compartment cooling capacity

Remove headliner

 Only in the left-hand and right-hand area of the recirculating air filter.



Remove/install headliner

Using the temperature measuring equipment sensor, measure the temperature of the air flowing out of the openings (8)

 The temperature of the air flowing out after operating for approx. five minutes must be significantly below the outside temperature. Otherwise the leaktightness of the air conditioning must be checked:





Check passenger compartment radial blower

Turn blower rotary switch (1) from stage 1 to stage 2 and then to stage 3

 The blower capacity of the radial blower must audibly increase significantly.

Compare the air flowing out at the openings (8)

 If the force of the air flowing out is unequal:



Check radial blower for proper operation.



Check passenger compartment recirculated air flaps

Remove recirculating air filter

Press switch (4) for "Passenger compartment recirculated air" and check position of air flaps (9)

 See operating instructions for Konvekta

 The Smog indicator lamp (5) must light up, and the air flaps (9) must be open.

Press switch (4) for "Passenger compartment fresh air" and check position of air flaps (9)

 The Smog indicator lamp (5) must go out, and the air flaps (9) must be closed.

Press switch (4) for "Passenger compartment mixed air" and check position of air flaps (9)

 The air flaps (9) must be in the center position.



Check passenger compartment roof heater

Turn rotary knob (6) for "Passenger compartment temperature" to the right as far as possible

After a waiting time of approx. 3 minutes check whether the shutoff valve (10) heats up

Using the temperature measuring equipment sensor, measure the temperature of the air flowing out of the openings (8)

 Warm air must come out of the openings (8) on the left-hand and right-hand vehicle side.



Remove/install headliner

Switch off engine
