The following assessments must be performed
Check whether the steering play can be reproduced. The steering play must only be checked when the engine is running.
Check whether the customer is possibly complaining about the series production configuration; compare with a reference vehicle if necessary.
Check whether the play is the same in left-hand drive vehicles and right-hand drive vehicles.
Check whether the play can be felt when the vehicle is stationary/parked or when driving.
Check whether noises are produced together with the play. If yes, how are the noises noticed?
Check | Notes | Remedy | |
universal joint | |||
1 | Remove the universal joints and check for play (do not damage the universal joints). | Play present | Replace lower steering shaft and/or steering column. |
Tie rod with axial joint and tie rod end
2 | Can play be felt when pulling/pushing on the tie rod ends and the axial joints? | Assess the axial joints and tie rod ends:
Play present | Replace inner and outer tie rod individually.
Steering column | There are two kinds of play at the steering column:
3 | Turn the steering wheel back and forth and feel the universal joints to check whether play can be felt there. | Switch off the engine before performing the check (no power assistance).
Play present | Replace the steering column and/or lower steering shaft (with universal joint).
Steering gear (without tie rods) | A certain amount of radial play is required because of the technical design of the steering gear. This radial play is normal and must not be mistaken for increased play.
4 | Check the steering gear elastomer bearings. | The steering gear is secured to the front axle carrier by elastomer bearings. These can wear with high mileages and after a long service life. The steering can then move excessively in the fastening points and cause spongy handling characteristics.
With wear | Replace elastomer bearing.
5 | Measure and adjust play between thrust piece and toothed rack. | If all other causes have been ruled out, the play may be located in the steering gear.
Play outside tolerance and cannot be adjusted | Replace steering gear. |
