1 | Measure the height of ring gear side bearings (depth bearing) and of the flange-side bearing (friction bearing) |
Measure the difference between the bearing heights, with and without cap. |
Example of how to calculate the difference between dimensions A and B:
Measure A: bearing with cover = 32.121.
Measure B: bearing without cover = 28.950.
Measure E: (A) 32.121 - (B) 28.950 = 3.171 (E).
Example of how to calculate the difference between dimensions C and D:
Measure C: bearing with cover = 32.120.
Measure D: bearing without cover = 28.950.
Measure F: (C) 32.120 - (D) 28.950 = 3.170 (F).

2 | Determine the friction shim of the pinion bearings, by adding the dimensions E + F + G + P |
The pad of the basic pinion depth should have already been obtained when determining the pinion assembly dimension. |
Measure P: Shim of the basic pinion depth, example: P = 0.950
Dimension G = Thickness of the housing support (1) for the pinion bearing caps, e.g., G = 23.992.
Total sum: (E) 3.170 + (F) 3.171 + (G) 23.992 + (P) 0.950 = 31.283
Subtract from this value the pinion spacer bushing value, e.g. H = 29.420.
Calculation: 31.283 - 29.420 (H) = 1.863 (Friction shim)

After calculating the friction pad and after assembling the differential, measure the frictional torque. Adjust the torque wrench on the pinion, turn the key three times continuously. If the frictional torque is above specification, use a friction pad thicker than calculated. If the frictional torque is lower, use a thinner friction pad.
