Leaf springs/air bellows - visual inspection for damage

Check

 Danger!

Risk of death due to lowering the vehicle when working between the wheels and body. Risk of injury from being trapped or crushed when working on the air suspension

Do not work between the wheel and wheel arch or in the wheel well.

Only carry out check and adjustment operations from underneath the vehicle.

Secure areas with moving vehicle parts against unauthorized access.

Detach linkage (4) from lever (2) of corresponding air suspension valve (3)

Press lever (2) of air suspension valve (3) upwards for admitting air to air spring bellows (1)

Check surface of air spring bellows (1) for chafe marks, crack formation and material fatigue

 The fold area (arrows) is subjected to a particularly high load.

If damage is present 

Replace air spring bellows

- subject to separate repair order.

Check piston (5) for soiling and rust formation

 In the event of debris: 

Clean piston

- subject to separate repair order.

 In the event of rust formation: 

Replace piston

- subject to separate repair order.

Press lever (2) of air suspension valve (3) downwards for ventilation and check seat of air spring bellows (1) on the piston (5) ; if necessary correct the position

 The air spring bellows must not be twisted.

Install linkage (4) on lever (2)

Carry out check of remaining air spring bellows in the same manner
