Service Information bulletin: Retrofit of a permanent magnet retarder

We would like to notify you that with immediate effect, a permanent magnet retarder (code BA2) can be retrofitted for certain Atego vehicles.

For the permanent magnet retarder retrofit, various installation kits have been defined and instructions for the retrofit compiled to match the vehicle equipment.

The permanent magnet retarder offers the following advantages:

 Lifelong maintenance free additional braking effect

 Greater brake power (braking torque 650 Nm, additional brake power up to 180 kw)

 Preservation of service brake (approx. 60% reduction in service)

 Wear-free brakes and reduced tire wear

 Improved service contract (-3%)

 Fewer braking/shifting operations

 Reduction in driver stress

 Greater ride comfort

 Greater safety, shorter braking distance

To achieve a swift installation of the permanent magnet retarder or to keep the idle time of the vehicle as low as possible for the customer, the following points must be clarified first in advance:

1 The vehicle to be retrofitted has to be checked to see if it is equipped with a parameterizable special module (PSM) and the parts kit has to be selected to match it.

2 The diameter of the transmission output flange has to be determined, the parts kit is to be selected to match it.

3 The vehicle's data card is to be used to check whether the vehicle to be retrofitted is equipped with the code (MD9) CC, an operating lever for the engine control and permanent brake is to be ordered to match.

4 Ask, whether and how the vehicle to be retrofitted is to have the drive shaft shortened or the bracket replaced, per email during vehicle conversion to the following address: [email protected]

 The following text should be used for the query:

"Dear Sir or Madam,

We are retrofitting an Atego WDB (complete vehicle identification number) with a permanent magnet retarder (code BA2). Could you please notify us whether a shortening / exchange of the drive shaft or the bracket is required. If yes, please notify us of the subsequent replacement part number and SAA numbers of the drive shaft or bracket."

5 Because the transmission housing rear section may only be processed with tools (tool kit and angular drill) from the Voith company, the procurement of the tools must be coordinated with the Voith company.

The required tools can be hired out for a nominal fee of 2100 for the tool kit and 1000 for the angular drill incl. the tool support MK1, from the Voith company.

When returning the required tools within a period of
2 weeks (10 workdays) after date of delivery, you will receive a credit of 2000 for the tool kit and one of 950 for the angular drill.

If returned later the amount of the credit is reduced by 100 for the tool kit and by 50 for the angular drill for each week started. You shall be held liable for the costs involved in replacing damaged parts .
