Defective voltage regulators have been found on many alternators which have been sent back.
In the case of a complaint the voltage regulator is to be replaced individually after the test and in the event of a defect.
Service Information SI15.40-P-0003A "Alternator diagnosis" must be observed for test work.
The work instructions (AR15.40-P5760...) for the respective engine model designation are available in the WIS. The required parts are to be determined in the EPC. With water-cooled alternators, caused by the sealing concept, replacing the regulator is never approved.
When removing the regulator it is essential to pay attention to the length of the brushes and the form of wear on the brushes.
1 Check length of brushes (A) on regulator.
If the minimum dimension of a brush is dropped below, the regulator must be replaced (see picture 1).
2 Check shape of carbon brush wear.
If the brushes have worn at an angle (picture 2, arrow), this indicates damage to the alternator bearings. The alternator must be replaced.
