Danger! | Risk of injury caused by pinching or jamming when working on loaded springs or spring bodies | Use only approved clamping devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
Danger! | Risk of injury as a result of trapping or crushing when working on the partly open Vario roof (stop mode) or within its closing range as a result of the Vario roof suddenly collapsing | Secure the Vario roof with a suitable special tool.
Danger! | Risk of injury. Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components.
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid. | Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.
| Notes on Vario roof assembly work | ||
| Use of the special "valve block" tool when performing diagnosis on the Vario roof hydraulic system allows rapid and precise troubleshooting on the hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5) and the hydraulic cylinder. | ||
| Before starting the test, check oil level in reservoir of hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5), correct if necessary (see Maintenance manual) Oil loss in supply reservoir | ||
| Remove | ||
1 | Remove paneling on the right-hand side of the trunk | Do not remove rear center section paneling.
2 | Check tightening torque on emergency actuation valve (N) of hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5), correct tightening torque if necessary. | Tightening torque should not be exceeded because the valve seat can be damaged and pressure loss can occur in the hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5).

3 | Connect pressure gauge to hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5) | For connection pressure gauge, see:
| Connection schematic for pressure gauge on Vario roof hydraulic unit (VR) | ||
tester. | |||
4 | Disconnect soft top connector (Reed contact switch) (X23/7) | Yellow connector.
5 | Close trunk cover closed limit switch (S69/10) with adhesive tape (see arrow)
| Install | ||
6 | Connect valve block to hydraulic unit
Valve block | |||
7 | Close all connections on valve block (2) with knurled screws (7)
Check | |||
8 | Actuate Vario roof switch (S84) five seconds in the "closing" direction and simultaneously read off hydraulic pressure on pressure gauge | Replace hydraulic unit at a hydraulic pressure of < 180 bar.
Remove hydraulic unit | |||
Test adapter. | |||
9 | At a hydraulic pressure of > 180 bar, open connector hydraulic line (20 ) on valve block (2) with knurled screw (7)
10 | Actuate Vario roof switch (S84) five seconds in the "closing" direction and simultaneously read off hydraulic pressure of pressure gauge (6) | At a hydraulic pressure of < 180 bar, replace right hydraulic cylinder for Vario roof actuation Removal, see:
Remove Vario roof actuation hydraulic cylinder
11 | At a hydraulic pressure of > 180 bar, reclose connection for hydraulic line (20) on valve block (2) and open hydraulic line (21) with knurled screw (7)
12 | Actuate Vario roof switch (S84) five seconds in the "closing" direction and simultaneously read off hydraulic pressure of pressure gauge (6) | At a hydraulic pressure of < 180 bar, replace left hydraulic cylinder for Vario roof actuation. Removal, see:
Remove Vario roof actuation hydraulic cylinder
13 | At a hydraulic pressure of > 180 bar, reclose connection for hydraulic line (21) on valve block (2) and open hydraulic line (31) with knurled screw (7)
14 | Actuate Vario roof switch (S84) five seconds in the "closing" direction and simultaneously read off hydraulic pressure of pressure gauge (6) | At a hydraulic pressure of < 180 bar, replace front lock cylinder. Removal, see:
Remove hydraulic cylinder from front lock
15 | At a hydraulic pressure of > 180 bar, reclose connection for hydraulic line (31) on valve block and open hydraulic line (42) with knurled screw (7)
16 | Actuate Vario roof switch (S84) five seconds in the "closing" direction and simultaneously read off hydraulic pressure of pressure gauge (6) | At a hydraulic pressure of < 180 bar, replace right hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation.

17 | At a hydraulic pressure of > 180 bar, reclose connection for hydraulic line (42) on valve block (2) and open hydraulic line (44) with knurled screw (7)
18 | Actuate Vario roof switch (S84) five seconds in the "closing" direction and simultaneously read off hydraulic pressure of pressure gauge (6) | At a hydraulic pressure of < 180 bar, replace left hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation
Remove hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation
| Remove | ||
19 | Disconnect hydraulic lines for valve block (2) from hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5) | When disconnecting, hold a rag around the hydraulic line connections to catch oil running out.
20 | Disconnect all of the vehicle's own hydraulic lines from valve block (2) and connect to hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5) | The hydraulic lines as well as the connections for the hydraulic soft top actuation unit (A7/5) have corresponding numbers (20, 21, 31, 42, 44) .
| Install | ||
