Stretch the boots (11) by turning the steering onto left and right lock and check for damage (cracks, chafe marks, intrusions) in the process


Never check the boots (11) by pressing in or around the ribs.
This results in damage to the boots (11).

 Perfect sealing of the boots (11) is required for proper operation of the rack-and-pinion steering (23).

 

Remove/install

Remove track rod (10)

Unscrew lock nut (10f)

Open left and right paneling (1) at the separation point (arrow)

Detach inner clamp (11a) and outer clamp (11b) from boot (11)

 Installation: Ensure that the attachment position for the inner clamp (11a) and outer clamp (11b) is correct.

Pull off bellows (11)

 Installation: Slide the boot (11) onto the rack-and-pinion steering (23) and position.



Check

Inspect steering rack and axial joint of inner track rod (12) for signs of corrosion and play

If the axial joint is worn, replace inner tie rod (12):



Replace inner tie rod with axial joint (12)
