Modification notes
| Checking | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid | Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by moving parts that can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases, even sever extremities | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components.
1 | Raise front axle and lower onto jack stands | The wheels must turn freely.
2 | Check wheel angle and adjust if necessary | If the wheel angle is changed, the hydraulic limiter must be adjusted.
3 | Check center steering position on steering gear, adjust if necessary
4 | Print out test log for steering | Document the following tests with the steering test log .
| Error list for steering, form | ||
5 | Unscrew plug (3) from test connection (4)
6 | Mount pressure gauge (6) with test hose (7) to test connection (4)
| |||
Check hydraulic limiter for right and left steer
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
7 | Start engine and run at an increased idle speed of approx. 800 rpm until the steering gear oil is heated up to approx. 50 °C | Use a commercially available infrared-temperature measuring instrument to measure the oil temperature on the steering gear oil line.
8 | Turn steering wheel with normal force of the hand up to the mechanical stop to the right. | Only a brief (max. 5 s) pull against the mechanical stop is permitted on the circumference of the steering wheel, as otherwise the steering system may be damaged.
9 | On a steering wheel pulled opposite to the mechanical stop, read off the adjustment pressure of the pressure reduction valve on the pressure gauge (6) and note it down
10 | Perform check for right steer similar to procedure for left steer and note down
11 | Compare noted values against adjustment pressure of pressure reduction valves | If the noted values deviate from the specified values, adjust the hydraulic limiter.
Adjust hydraulic limiter for right and left steer
12 | Release jam nut and screw adjustment screw for left limiter (5) all the way in | The jam nut here must contact the head of the adjustment screw for the left limiter (5) and the steering gear housing.
For safety reasons, the adjustment screws for left and right limiter (5, 8) must be turned in at least 3 turns. Otherwise, the limiter adjustment screws for left and right (5, 8) may burst because of the maximum pressure generated in the steering, because of insufficient cover in the thread.
13 | Turn steering wheel with normal force of the hand up to the stop to the left and observe the adjustment pressure of the left pressure reduction valve on the pressure gauge (6) | Only a brief (max. 5 s) pull against the mechanical stop is permitted on the circumference of the steering wheel, as otherwise the steering system may be damaged.
14 | Release steering wheel and adjust the adjustment screw for the left limiter (5) | If a higher pressure than permissible is measured, screw in adjustment screw for left limiter (5). If a lower pressure than permissible is measured, unscrew adjustment screw for left limiter (5).
15 | Turn steering wheel with normal force of the hand up to the stop to the left again and observe the adjustment pressure of the left pressure reduction valve on the pressure gauge (6) | Only a brief (max. 5 s) pull against the mechanical stop is permitted on the circumference of the steering wheel, as otherwise the steering system may be damaged.
Repeat adjustment procedure until the permissible pressure is measured on the pressure gauge (6).
16 | Position jam nut of adjustment screw for left limiter (5) | Counter the left end limiting adjustment screw (5).
| |||
17 | Perform adjustment for right steer on adjustment screw for left limiter (8) as for procedure used for left steer | Operation steps 9 to 14.
18 | Turn off engine | ||
19 | Remove pressure gauge (6) with test hose (7) from test connection (4)
20 | Tighten plug (3) on test connection (4)
21 | Raise front axle, remove jack stands and lower vehicle
22 | Conduct a road test | During the road test check the overall steering behavior of the vehicle. |
