Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid | Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by fingers being pinched or crushed when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, liftgates or sliding roof | Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts.

| Evaluating steering rack when repairing accident vehicles | ||
1 | Deactivate easy entry/exit function | Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move into a different position if the driver door is opened or closed for example. Damage to the upper frame can occur when the holding device is installed.
Disabling takes place via the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu of the multifunction display, see owner's manual.
2 | Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix in place with holding device | On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

9 | Remove steering coupling (25)
10 | Undo bolts (23a) for retaining plate (1g) on front axle carrier (1)
11 | Undo bolts (23g) and remove retaining plate (1g)
12 | Remove high-pressure expansion hose (30i) and return line (30f) | Seal line connections with plugs.

13 | Remove rack-and-pinion steering (23) | Check rubber mount (21) of rack-and-pinion mounting for signs of damage and replace if necessary:
Remove rubber mounts (21) on rack-and-pinion steering mounting.
| Install | ||
14 | Clean bolts, nuts and contact surfaces | The bolts (23a, 23g), nuts and contact surfaces of the retaining plate (1g) and front axle carrier (1) must be free of oil, grease and preservative. Under exposure to heat the lubricants can liquify, allowing bolts and nuts to loosen.
15 | Slide locking plate onto steering coupling (25) | The locking plate is available as a replacement part.
Insert a new self-locking nut into the existing locking plate.
16 | Insert rack-and-pinion steering (23)
17 | Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position
18 | Install steering joint (25) | Do not install engine compartment paneling.
19 | Attach return line (30f) | Replace sealing ring.
| |||
20 | Attach high-pressure expansion hose (30i) | Replace sealing ring.
| |||
21 | Mount rack-and-pinion steering (23) and support bracket (1g) onto front axle carrier (1) using bolts (23a, 23g) | The bolts (23a, 23g), nuts and contact surfaces of the retaining plate (1g) and front axle carrier (1) must be free of oil, grease and preservative. When exposed to heat the lubricants can liquify, allowing bolts and nuts to loosen.
