Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off during lifting | Only lift vehicle at the lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Topical note | Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
Toe-in alignment | |||
1 | Check toe-in. | In the straight-ahead position, the wheels must have toe-in as per wheel alignment specifications.
2 | Measure the distance “A”. | Distance A: Leading edges between the front of front wheel brake drums machined surface.
3 | Measure the distance “B”. | Distance B: Trailing edges between the rear of front wheel brake drums machines surface.
B - A= toe in (1 to 3 mm). | |||
4 | If the toe in found to be excess/insufficient, adjust tie rod length between ball joint center to center distance. | Adjust the distance to 1693.50 mm by loosening ball joint clamp bolts and rotate the tie rod by hand and tighten the clamp bolts.
Toe-in setting procedure with trammel bar
5 | Move the vehicle into bay with a level floor. | Move the vehicle forward and reverse for ensuring the straight ahead position.
Roll the vehicle to a stop without the use of service brake and parking brake.
6 | Chock (54) the rear wheels. | Place 5" (127 mm) long piece of masking tape (55) over the second rib from outer edge tyre parallel to tread on both rear tyres, half way up to tyre height.
7 | Mark a line (56) on the masking tape corresponding to mid of rib on both the tyres. | Position the special tool toe in toe out gauge (57) behind the front tyres.
The pointers must be raised/ lowered until they are at the wheel centerline height.
Gauge | |||
8 | Place the pointers at the center line of the masking tape and secure the pointer (58) set screws. | Ensure that both the pointers are at the wheel centerline height and same height level.
9 | Mark the location of one of the pointers with a simple horizontal mark (59) on the masking tape. | Note the measurements from graduated scale (B).
Remove the special tool from behind the wheels.
10 | Roll the truck forward until the mark on the tape travels 180 degrees. | Position the toe in toe out gauge (57) at the front of the tyres.
11 | Position one pointer to the center line of the tape on the side that has the horizontal mark. | The pointer and the mark must be at the same height.
12 | If the measured value deviates from the standard value, with the tyres pointed forward, loosen clamp (60) bolts. | Adjust the toe-in to the standard value by turning tie rod (50) with a pipe wrench.
Tighten the tie rod clamp bolts and nuts. |
