Remove wheels at rear axle

Push back brake pads and release parking brake

 If it is not possible to crank the rear axle shafts by hand

hand: 

Detach rear brake cables

Drain oil at rear axle center assembly

 After draining, screw in the oil drain screw again and tighten.



Detach propeller shaft (1) from joint flange (4)

 Tie the propeller shaft (1) back using a piece of welding wire.

Spin join flange (4) by hand and check axial play of bearing

 The bearing must be free of play. Otherwise, damage to the bearing and the gear set in the rear axle differential will be unavoidable.

If there is play or if there are particles (shavings) in the drained oil, replace the gear set and the bearing in the rear axle center assembly: 

Remove/install drive pinion and ring gear with differential.

Measure and note down friction torque at drive pinion flange

 Measure friction value at approx. 50 1 rpm. A cordless screwdriver can be used for the measurement.



Detach joint flange (4) from drive pinion

Remove radial shaft sealing ring (5)



Install

Install radial shaft sealing ring (5)

 Fill space between dust lip and sealing lip with grease.

Attach joint flange (4) to drive pinion

 During assembly operations without removing the drive pinion.

Operate brake pedal several times until brake pads contact brake discs (brake pressure built up).

 If necessary according to the extent of removal: 

Hook in rear brake cables.

Adjusting parking brake.
