General
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) reduces the risk of skidding, jackknifing or overturning of the vehicle in critical situations, e.g. in the event of any sudden evasive maneuvers or excessive cornering speed.
ESP® is a subsystem of the electronic brake system (EBS). An ESP® control intervention function is calculated in the electronic brake system (EBS) control unit.
If the electronic brake system (EBS) control unit detects a critical driving situation, it counters this by means of the following control intervention functions:
Selective braking of individual wheels on tractor vehicle
Bedding in of brakes on overall vehicle combination
Influencing of the engine torque
ESP® is only activated at speeds of approx. 20 km/h and higher. There is no control intervention function when reversing or if the electronic brake system (EBS) is defective.
The ESP® system also consists of the following main components along with the electronic brake system (EBS) control unit:
Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) control unit
Steering wheel angle sensor (SAS)
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) / Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) button can be used to switch the ESP® on and off manually. If the ESP® is manually switched off, the ESP® deactivation indicator lamp (1) lights up in the instrument cluster control unit (ICUC) on vehicles with code J6A (Classic cockpit) or in the instrument cluster control unit screen (ICS) on vehicles with code J6B (Multimedia cockpit) or code J6C (Multimedia cockpit, interactive). During a control intervention function, the ESP® indicator lamp (2) flashes in the instrument cluster control unit (ICUC) on vehicles with code J6A (Classic cockpit) or in the instrument cluster control unit screen (ICS) on vehicles with code J6B (Multimedia cockpit) or code J6C (Multimedia cockpit, interactive).
If the ESP® indicator lamp (2) remains lit, then the system is deactivated because a fault has been detected or the vehicle is not at driving level.
