Damage to tires through high-pressure cleaner

Cleaning the wheels with high-pressure cleaners can lead to damage on the tires.

The water temperature is not significant here. Damage will, in particular, occur in the area of the tire side wall (arrow). The pulsating spray of water causes the tire to vibrate at the point at which the water is applied to it. The resulting frictional heat cannot be dissipated quickly enough and this in turn causes local overheating and damage through melting.

D40.10-0006-01

Use of flat-type spray nozzles with an opening angle of 35° with a maximum pressure of 80 bar for the cleaning equipment and at a minimum distance of
300 mm between the nozzle and the cleaning target is permissible. The water spray should not be pointed at any single point for lengthy periods or directly onto the tire surface, but rather it should be kept constantly on the move.

Damaged tires must always be replaced.

Power and circular spray nozzles, which are also installed in so-called "dirt cutters", may not be used, as they can cause damage to the tires after only a short period of use (less than 1 second) and when used at a spraying distance of less than 700 mm.
