| Before checking the sector's play make sure there is no play at the universal joint, and the steering shaft (splined profile) as well as on the ball joints and Pitman arm. | ||
Check the universal joint articulation
1 | Force the universal joint articulation (3) sideway, with a screwdriver and with the other hand force to the lever effect. Alternate the movements with the screwdriver and with the hand | The universal joint articulation must not present perceptible play.
2 | Grasp the universal joint (3) and the steering shaft (4) and, with the help of an assistant, turn alternately the steering wheel 1/4 of one turn to both sides | The universal joint articulations and the steering shaft splines must not present perceptible play.
Check the ball joints for play
3 | Grasp the ball joint (2) and support the thumb on the tie-rod (1)
4 | With the help of an assistant, turn the steering wheel alternately 1/4 of one turn to both sides | The articulation must transmit, without play, all the steering wheel's movement.
There must be no perceptible radial play.
Maximum permissible axial play.
5 | Examine the tie-rods, steering rods and the Pitman arm for fastening or damage
Check the rubber boots | |||
6 | Clean the rubber boots (arrow) and their surrounding
7 | Examine the rubber boots (arrow) for damages and if they seat firmly on the support surfaces
8 | Individually check all rubber boots (arrows) for damage | Carefully check the rubber boots for tear or damage, including the folds. If there is any anomaly:
Mandatory replacement of the ball joints or even the replacement of tie-rods and steering rods, should it be the case, against separate invoicing.
Check the sector's play
Danger! | Risk of accident by the unintentional rolling with the engine running. Risk of injury by crushing and burns from contact during engine starting procedure or with the engine running | Ensure the vehicle against unintentional rolling. Utilize closed and well fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or moving parts.
9 | Start the engine and place the front wheels in straight ahead position
10 | Check the play of the sector (a) turning the steering wheel to the left and to the right until side movement takes place on the front wheels | If the permissible value for steering wheel play is exceeded:
Check the play existing in all steering system components. |
