| Check | ||
| Before checking the clearance between the worm gear and sector, make sure that there is no clearance between the crosshead and the steering shaft ribbed profile, in the Pitman arm and in the ball joints. | ||
Check the crosshead joints
1 | Force laterally the crosshead joint (3) with a screwdriver and with the other hand exert force to the lever effect. Alternate the movements with the screwdriver and the hand | The crosshead joint must not show a perceptible play.
2 | Push the crosshead (3) and the steering column (4) and, with the assistance of other person, turn the steering wheel 1/4 of turn alternately to one side and to the other. | The crosshead joint and the steering wheel ribbed must not show a perceptible play.
Check the ball joints play
3 | Push the crosshead (2) supporting the finger in the connection arm (1) and, with the assistance of other person, turn the steering wheel 1/4 of turn alternately to one side and to the other. | The ball joint must transmit, without any play, all the steering wheel movement.
There must be non perceptible play in the radial direction.
Maximum axial play allowed.
4 | Check the connection bars, the steering bar and the Pitman arm for attachment or damages
Check the rubber bellows
5 | Clean the rubber bellows (arrows) and their surrounding area
6 | Individually check all the rubber bellows (arrows) for damages | Carefully check the rubber bellows for damages or tears, including in the folds. If the rubber bellows is damaged:
Obligatorily change the ball joints or, if it is the case, the connection and steering bars, with separate invoicing.
Check the play between the worm gear and sector
7 | Run the engine and place the front wheels in a straight position
8 | Turn the steering wheel alternately to one side and to the other | Maximum steering play (a) allowed
If the steering play (a) is excessive, make sure that the steering device does not have any play before carry on the adjustment. |
