To ensure the availability of the vehicle and prevent damage to the automatic transmission, the emergency-running mode comes into effect automatically in the event of critical faults in the transmission control.
A distinction is made between electronic and mechanical emergency-running mode.
Electronic emergency-running mode
When the electronic transmission control recognizes faults in quite specific components which can be assigned to one gear, this gear is not engaged anymore. It is not possible to shift past the defective gear.
Manual emergency-running mode
When the electronic transmission control recognizes a relevant fault, the transmission shifts into 4th gear to prevent any overspeeding due to a downshift. The solenoid valves and pressure controller are engaged hydraulically in 4th gear and the reverse gear lockout does not function.
3rd gear in the transmission is engaged when the engine is started again.
When the electronic transmission control recognizes a relevant fault as early as when the engine is started, the transmission remains in manual emergency-running mode, i.e. the transmission shifts into 3rd gear irrespective of the selector lever position "D", "3", "2" or "1".
It is still possible to engage reverse gear, neutral and park position via the selector lever. However, the reverse gear lockout is ineffective.
