Shift transmission to "N"

 Danger!

Risk of explosion caused by escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or metal spatter due to short circuit. Risk of burn injuries caused by short circuit. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or absorption of lead over the skin or orifices

No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.

Wear acid-resistant gloves and clothing and safety glasses with side guards.

Do not place any conductive objects on the battery and avoid any short circuit from battery positive to ground.

Only fill liquid battery electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

Disconnect ground line at battery

 Installation: Code radio, clock and adjust stationary heater timer if necessary.

Unscrew oil filler pipe (2) from crankcase and transmission

Do not separate exhaust gas recirculation pipe, oil filler tube remains on engine.

Unclip cable harness from oil filler pipe and unplug connector (X22/2)

 Installation: Replace cable ties.

Unscrew transmission output rpm sensor (B49)

 Installation: Replace sensor sealing ring and cable tie when reinstalling.

Remove shift rod (7)

  This requires removal of the securing clip

Drain transmission oil

  Remove oil drain screw on oil pan (9).

Drain gear oil in torque converter

  Remove oil drain screw on torque converter (10).

 Installation: Install new seal

 If the transmission fluid is burnt or contains wear particles, the oil cooler lines and oil cooler must be flushed out:

Flush out oil cooler and oil cooler line

Unbolt oil lines (3) to oil cooler

Disconnect torque converter from driver plate at flange

  This requires removal of cover (12).

Remove rear engine support (6)

Unbolt propeller shaft (5) from transmission output flange and transfer case, and remove bolts

 The propeller shaft is easier to remove if the transmission is removed at an angle.

 Installation: When installing the propeller shaft ensure that this is aligned between the mounting flanges of the transfer case and automatic transmission. Replace bolts.

Remove stabilizer

Undo cable tie on cable harness running along the frame to the left of the transmission

 Facilitates reinstallation of the transmission due to the restricted space available.

Unbolt the transmission at the crankcase and remove downwards at an angle, at the same time removing the propeller shaft

 Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out.

 Installation: Screw on ground strap (4) on the right of the transmission.

Remove torque converter

 Installation: Grease the torque converter lightly on drive flange.

Install in the reverse order

Check oil level in automatic transmission, correct if necessary

 When refilling or after an oil change, pour in approx. 5 l of transmission oil first.

Read out fault memory with handheld tester (HHT)

Read out fault memory and erase using STAR DIAGNOSIS

 STAR DIAGNOSIS
Stored faults which can result from lines being disconnected or from simulation during removal and installation or test work, have to be processed and erased in the fault memories after completing the work



Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory
