Modification notes
| Removing | ||
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
1 | Remove oil pan | Engine 271 with transmission 716.6
2 | Spin engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until piston in first cylinder is positioned on TDC | Grooves (1) on drive wheels (8, 9) of the Lanchester balance shafts must be horizontal and must point in the direction of the guide pulley (3).
3 | Identify drive chain (6) and drive gears (8, 9) to each other with the markings (2)
4 | Remove bolts (4) of drive gear (8) | Counterhold Lanchester balance shaft (11) at square with open wrench.
| |||
5 | Remove drive gear (8) from Lanchester balance shaft (11) | Press slide rail (5) at chain tensioner with a suitable assembly lever to the inside and remove drive gear (8) from Lanchester balance shaft (11), at the same time remove drive chain (6) from drive gear (8).
6 | Remove drive chain (6) from drive gear (9) and guide pulley (3)
7 | Detach Lanchester differential housing (7) from crankcase, to do so unscrew the screws (10) | Slacken bolts (10) in reverse order of the tightening procedure:
Tightening pattern for Lanchester differential housing
8 | Remove Lanchester differential housing (7) from crankcase
9 | Remove transfer tube (12) between oil pump and crankcase from crankcase
10 | Remove oil pump | If replacing the Lanchester differential housing (7).
| Install | ||
11 | Install oil pump | If replacing the Lanchester differential housing (7).
12 | Clean separating surfaces at Lanchester differential housing (7) and at crankcase | Replace gaskets (13).
13 | Insert transfer tube (12) between oil pump and crankcase into the crankcase
14 | Position Lanchester differential housing (7) at crankcase | Pay attention to correct seating of the Gaskets (13), the guide sleeves (14) in the crankcase and of the transfer tube (12) between oil pump and crankcase.
15 | Mount Lanchester differential housing (7) at crankcase, to do so screw in the screws (10) | Observe tightening procedure of screws (10):

| |||
16 | Slide drive gear (8) onto Lanchester balance shaft (11) and fasten with bolt (4) | For this step, press Lanchester balance shaft (11) forward and twist if required. When fastening the bolt (4), counterhold Lanchester balance shaft (11) at square with open wrench.
| |||
| |||
17 | Press slide rail (5) at chain tensioner to the inside and fit drive chain (6) onto the drive gears (8, 9) and the guide pulley (3) | Press slide rail (5) to the inside with suitable assembly lever. The scribe marks on the drive chain (6) must match the scribe marks of the drive gears (8, 9).
18 | Crank engine at the crankshaft in direction of rotation and position the piston of the first cylinder on TDC
19 | Check setting of Lanchester balance shafts | Grooves (1) on drive wheels (8, 9) of the Lanchester balance shafts must be horizontal and must point in the direction of the guide pulley (3).
20 | Installing oil pan | Engine 271 with transmission 716.6
| Check | ||
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
21 | Check for leaktightness when engine is running |
