Risk of injury
With the heating of the engine the cooling system will become pressurized. At a sudden opening, there is the risk of burns caused by out coming steam or overheated coolant.
Risk of poisoning
In the case of accidental coolant ingestion, poisoning symptoms may occur, such as headache, stomach pain, nausea, respiratory arrest, faints, vomit and convulsions.
Protection measures and safety procedures:
Let the cooling system cool down to a temperature below 90 °C.
Slowly open the coolant reservoir cap. For traditional caps turn to the first notch and for threaded caps turn approximately a turn and let the excess pressure out, next turn it up to removal.
Utilize gloves, appropriate clothing and protection glasses.
Never keep coolant in beverage containers.
First aid measures:
In case of burns, wash the affected skin area with abundant running water and cover it with sterilized bandage.
Drink plenty of water with addition of activated charcoal.
In the case of more serious burns or of coolant ingestion, seek medical help.
