The location of the vehicle as well as the direction and distance to the destination (are determined with the aid of the navigation system (after entering the destination). Then the actions required for reaching the destination (route guidance) are started.

The navigation system can be activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the radio and navigation module (Audio 30 APS) (A2/56).

The radio and navigation module (Audio 30 APS) (A2/56) contains a navigation processor with CD-ROM drive for reading the navigation data (digital map, language segments and software).

The navigation CD-ROM drive can also play audio CDs.

Destination entry

Entry of the destination can be accomplished with menu guidance on the radio and navigation module (Audio 30 APS) (A2/56) and is processed by the navigation processor. The system only allows entry of destinations stored on the CD-ROM.

The following possibilities are available for destination entry:

Call-up of stored destination in destination memory

Free menu guided entry of destination using the name (if destination is stored on CD-ROM).

Location finding
The navigation processor continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:

GPS location finding

Basic location finding (dead reckoning)

Map-supported location finding (map matching)

The correct position is determined by continuously comparing the location finding results of these three procedures.

Route calculation

The route is calculated by the navigation processor after entering the destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place.

The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor.

Route guidance
After the navigation processor has calculated the route, route guidance is started. This provides the driver with continuous information in the form of route guidance symbols which appear on the display on the radio and navigation module (Audio 30 APS) (A2/56) and by voice messages via the vehicle loudspeakers.
