Danger! | Danger of injury to eyes caused by steering oil emerging at high pressure. Danger of poisoning caused by swallowing steering oil | Wear safety glasses.
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it moving off. Wear closed and close-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
1 | Remove front engine cover | Engine 273 in model 463
2 | Remove air intake hose (1)
3 | Suction off oil from reservoir (7) of power steering pump
4 | Unscrew high-pressure expansion hose (2) from power steering pump | Place a suitable container underneath to collect the discharged oil.
5 | Fasten testing unit adapter line (3) to power steering pump
6 | Fasten connection fitting (4) to high-pressure expansion hose (2)
7 | Fasten testing unit pressure gauge (5) to adapter line (3)
8 | Fasten testing unit shutoff valve (6) between pressure gauge (5) and adapter line (3)
9 | Align test device and tighten all threaded connections | Position the test device in such a way that it will not come into contact with moving parts (e.g. fan or poly-V-belt) when the engine is started.
10 | Fill reservoir (7) of power steering pump
| Check and correct power steering fluid level | ||
11 | Start engine | ||
12 | Increase motor speed to approx. 1000 rpm
| Checking | ||
13 | Close shutoff valve (6) and check delivery pressure | Only carry out the test briefly so that the oil temperature does not rise unacceptably.
14 | Turn off engine | ||
15 | Suction off oil from reservoir (7) of power steering pump
16 | Detach test device | ||
| Install | ||
17 | Fasten high-pressure expansion hose (2) to power steering pump
18 | Fill reservoir (7) of power steering pump
| Check and correct power steering fluid level | ||
19 | Bleed steering system | The steering system bleeds itself automatically. With the engine running, turn steering wheel several times from left stop to right stop. When doing so, repeatedly check the oil level in the power steering and correct if necessary.
20 | Check threaded connection of high pressure hose (2) on power steering pump for leaks | Carry out visual inspection.
21 | Install air intake hose (1)
22 | Install front engine cover | Engine 273 in model 463 |
