| Remove | ||
1 | Remove the center differential
2 | Measure the clearance between crown gear teeth and pinion | The clearance value must be within the limit and must be maintained when reinstalling without replacing crown gear and pinion, in order to avoid axle noise.
| |||
| |||
3 | Tap with a suitable drift to remove seals (5) and fork shaft (6)
4 | Remove 2nd speed shifting fork (4)
5 | Remove 2nd speed lock plate (11)
6 | Remove crown gear adjustment screw (2)
7 | Remove lock ring (10) locking threaded ring (13)
8 | Unscrew bolts (22) and remove bearing caps (20) and washers (21) | Mark the bearing cap positions in the places indicated by arrows.
9 | Remove threaded rings (13) and (19)
10 | Remove differential assembly (16) with installed bearing races | Mark the positions of all used bearing races to avoid changing them.
| Check | ||
11 | Wash and inspect the components | Replace those needing to be replaced.
12 | Check outer race slide movement for bearings (14) and (18) | The outer bearing races must slide through the thrust blocks, however, without any play. This is essential to allow adjustment between crown gear teeth and pinion.
| Install | ||
13 | Mount bearing races (14) and (18) on the differential assembly | First oil the bearing races.
14 | Install differential assembly (16) in differential support housing (1) | The housing with the pinion must be installed and adjusted already.
15 | Install threaded rings (13) and (19)
16 | Install bearing caps (20), washers (21) and tighten bolts (22) | Observe the bearing cap positions that were marked on removal and also the alignment of threads between the threaded rings and the bearing caps.
| |||
17 | Adjust the preload of the bearings
18 | Adjust the clearance between crown gear teeth and pinion | For used crown gear and pinion, maintain the clearance as found before disassembly.
| |||
| |||
19 | Check the contact marks between the crown and pinion
20 | Check axial run-out (crown gear wobble) | Position the test gauge holder with magnetic base and the test gauge on the differential housing in a way that the gauge feeler touches the crown gear rear surface. Then rotate the pinion and check if there is any lateral run-out variation of the crown gear not within specifications.
Maximum admissible crown gear lateral run-out.
| |||
| |||
21 | Remove the differential assembly again | This becomes necessary in case the pinion was installed without the end bearing, as installation with the mounted bearing is not possible, because the bearing interferes with the crown gear.
22 | Remove the pinion, mount the end bearing and reinstall it in the assembly
23 | Reinstall the differential assembly and repeat the preload adjustment for the bearings
24 | If needed, repeat the adjustment of clearance between crown gear teeth and pinion | For used crown gear and pinion, maintain the clearance as found before disassembly.
25 | Check the contact marks between the crown and the pinion
26 | Install 2nd speed lock plate (11)
27 | Install new counter lock pin (23) on threaded ring (19)
28 | Install crown gear adjustment screw (2)
| |||
29 | Install 2nd speed shifting fork (4) and fasten it to fork shaft (6) | Tap with a suitable drift on shaft (6), to push it into the hole.
30 | Install new seals (5), one for each side of shaft (6) | Apply sealant to the seals before fitting them. |
