

Remove rear axle shafts

Remove propeller shaft

Remove left combination cylinder

Remove differential assembly.

Attach differential assembly to an assembly device

Remove both cotter pins (8)

Remove bolts (6)

Tighten bolts (6) up to contact surface

 Clean bolts (6) and coat with thread locking compound.

The bolts must not exert any contact force on the bearing caps (4).

Loosen ring nuts (5, 7) and screw in again until they abut the tapered roller bearings

Install dial indicator holder (3) with dial indicator (2) on the axle housing

 The measuring tip must abut the back of the ring gear (arrow) with a preload of approx. 2 mm.



Press ring gear (1) and differential to the left and right using
2 assembly levers and in the process read off the dial indicator (2)

 There must be no axial play present, if necessary continue screwing in the ring nuts (5, 7).

Screw in ring nuts (5, 7) by one tooth respectively, dimension (a)

 As a result of this the tapered roller bearings receive the necessary preload.

Remove dial indicator holder (3) with dial indicator (2)

Crank ring gear (1) several times

Install dial indicator holder (3) with dial indicator (2) on the axle housing

 The measuring tip must contact a tooth of the ring gear with approx. 2 mm preload.



Block drive pinion and
move ring gear (1) in both directions of rotation until a resistance is noticeable. Read off measurement value at the respective resistance on the dial gauge (2) and calculate gear backlash

 The difference in the two measured values gives the gear backlash.

Repeat the test on two further teeth, in each case offset by 120°.

Remove dial indicator holder (3) with dial indicator (2)



Check contact pattern of ring gear (1) and drive pinion

 If necessary adjust gear backlash once again (see steps 16 to 18) or if the installed dimension of the drive pinion is incorrect: 

Remove pinion housing with drive pinion and reinstall with corresponding shims.
