Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
Danger! | Danger to life from lowering vehicle when working between wheels and body. Risk of injury by trapping or crushing when working on air suspension system. | Do not work between wheels and wheel wells or in wheel box. Only carry out check and adjustment operations from underneath the vehicle. Secure areas with moving vehicle parts against unauthorized access.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension | Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | All models | |
1 | Bleed brake cylinder (7) | When the parking brake is applied the brake cylinders (7) are operated by spring force and are bled simultaneously.
2 | Bleeding the air suspension system | Ensure that the air spring bellows (10) and reservoir are unpressurized.
3 | Lift/jack up vehicle | Do not remove the wheel-engaging lifts after raising the vehicle. The vehicle must be secured on axle stands.
4 | Remove engine compartment paneling
5 | Remove propeller shaft | Remove the propeller shaft with the help of a second person.
6 | Detach level control linkage (3) | Perform on both sides.
7 | Separate compressed air lines (4) at the threaded connections (5) | All compressed air lines (4) must be unpressurized. Identify the compressed air lines (4) relative to the respective threaded connections (5). Seal connections.
Installation: Pay attention to the marking in order to prevent malfunctioning of the brake system.
8 | Separate electrical connector on parking brake pressure switch (B5) of brake cylinder (7) | Installation: Install new cable ties. Ensure that it cannot chafe.
9 | Detach left and right rear axle ABS sensor (B113) (B114) from portal housing | Carefully remove left rear axle ABS sensor (B113) and right rear axle ABS sensor (B114) in order to avoid damage.
Installation: Install new cable ties. Ensure that it cannot chafe.
| |||
10 | Detach shock absorber (9) from spring support (11)
| |||
11 | Detach rotary piston of air spring bellows (10) from spring support (11)
| |||
12 | Remove stabilizer | If necessary it is sufficient to detach the stabilizer bar from the bracket on the spring support (11) and to fold it downwards.
| |||
| |||
| |||
13 | Detach axle ventilation (8) from right trailing arm (2) and the body | Installation: Install new cable ties. Ensure that it cannot chafe. The axle ventilation (8) must not be blocked, clean if necessary.
14 | Remove both trailing arms (2) | Identify the installation position of shims fitted in order to ensure the correct driving position of the rear axle when installing otherwise increased tire wear can occur.
On the version with the fuel tank in front of the rear axle the right trailing arm (2) can only be removed after lowering the rear axle slightly.
Installation: Observe installation position of shims.
| |||
| |||
| |||
15 | Remove both diagonal links (1) | Identify the installation position of shims fitted in order to ensure the correct driving position of the rear axle when installing otherwise increased tire wear can occur.
Secure the rear axle to prevent it from tilting.
Installation: Observe installation position of shims.
| |||
| |||
| |||
16 | Lower rear axle. | ||
17 | Install in the reverse order
18 | Build up operating pressure of compressed-air system
19 | Check compressed-air system for leaks
20 | Check rear axle oil level and correct if necessary
| Rear axle - oil change | ||
21 | Check vehicle level, adjust if necessary |
