Remove/install

Secure vehicle to prevent it moving away.

Release parking brake.

Mechanically loosen combination brake cylinder.

Operate parking brake.

Mark compressed-air lines (1).

Remove compressed-air lines (1) and expose up to torque tube (15) on rear axle.

 Installation: Note attached markings.

Detach compressed-air line (2) of interwheel differential lock at valve block and expose up to torque tube (15) of rear axle.

Mark electrical connectors (4, 5).

Disconnect electrical connectors (4, 5).

 Installation: Note attached markings.

Expose electrical wiring harness (6) from torque tube (15) up to vehicle frame.

Mark bleed lines (3) at right and left at connecting point (A).

Disconnect bleed lines (3) at connecting point (A) and expose up to torque tube (15) of rear axle.

 Installation: Connect vent lines (3) using repair kit.
Note attached markings.

Remove screw (8) from both shock absorbers (7).

 Nut/bolt, shock absorber to rear axle

Completely remove transverse control arm (10).

 Bolt, transverse control arm to frame

Remove nuts (12) of stabilizer bar holder (11) and remove screws.

 On both sides of the vehicle.

Detach linkage for automatic load-dependent brake (ALB) (13) at rear axle.

Only on model 437.43 up to vehicle identification end number 262508 with rear axle 747.222, model 437.46 with rear axle 747.224

Support torque tube (15) using jack stand.

Remove screws (14) at torque ball housing.

 Bolt, torque ball housing to transfer case

Use chain hoist to pull rear axle away from transfer case then place wooden block between torque tube (15) and transfer case.

 Pull rear axle far enough away to gain access to the screws (16) of the propeller shaft (17).

 Installation: Clean sealing surface and apply sealant.

Remove screws (16) and remove propeller shaft (17).

 Installation: Before positioning the propeller shaft (17) at the transfer case, insert the previously specified shims into the torque ball housing.

Fix springs (18, 19) in place with tensioning strap (20).

 Fixing the springs (18, 19) in this position makes installation of the rear axle easier.

Raise vehicle at vehicle frame.

 Installation: Lower vehicle far enough until the springs (18, 19) rest on the spring cups.

Roll out rear axle to rear using suitable bar.

 Helper required.

Place down vehicle frame at rear on jack stands.



Check

Adjust preload of torque tube (15) to torque ball housing.

 Installation: Insert specified shims between the torque ball housing and transfer case when installing the rear axle.

Install in the reverse order



Check

Check oil levels in rear axle.



Check compressed-air lines (1, 2) for leak tightness.
