The various operations carried out when removing and install both rear axles are quite similar. Different operations are mentioned when necessary.

3

Slightly support the axle to be removed on the lifting device appropriate for removal

4

Drain the oil from the differential, the offsetting assembly and the planetary gear units

For vehicles sold out of Brazil, the recommended lubricants should be consulted on site http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com (Sheet 231.2).

Installation: Fill the rear axle with new oil specified for the vehicle. Lubricant oil for hydraulic steering case DBL 6623.60 - Class 236.2

Collect the drained oil in a suitable container to dispose of it in compliance with the environmental protection standards.

5

Remove the pins from the joints (2) of the combined cylinder stems (3) and remove the stems

The pneumatic system should be pressurized and parking brake should be disengaged.

Installation: Mount new cotter pins.

6

Depressurize the air tanks in the pneumatic system

7

Remove the ABS system sensors

For vehicles equipped with an ABS system.

8

Disconnect the venting pipe (4) on the shaft

9

Disconnect all connections of the central lubrication system tubes from the axle to be removed

In vehicles equipped with a central lubrication system

10

Cut the plastic clamps (9) securing the lines to the axle to be removed, and push them away with care

Installation: Secure the lines with new plastic clamps, suitable for this purpose.

11

Disconnect the electrical (11) and pneumatic (12) connections from the shaft to be removed

Installation: Use new sealing washers on the pneumatic connection and tighten the hollow screw to the specified tightening torque.

12

Loosen the horizontal stem of the ALB valve (16)

For vehicles equipped with ALB.

To keep unchanged the setting of the ALB valve, release the bracket (17) from the valve stem secured to the 1st rear axle, and disconnect the stem from the joint (18) of the 2nd axle. If the setting is changed, the valve should be adjusted again after the axle is installed, per the specification table applicable to the vehicle.

13

Disconnect the pneumatic connections (8) from the combined brake cylinders (3)

Installation: Mount new sealing washers, tighten the hollow screws to the specified tightening torque and check the pneumatic connections for leaks.

14

Remove the screws (10) and remove the combined brake cylinders (3)

Installation: Observe the correct installation position of the combined brake cylinders (3).

15

Loosen the screws fastening the drive shaft on the flange of the axle to be removed

Before removing any drive shaft, mark the position on the flanges and the drive shaft relative to the slot, to prevent changes to the original balance.

To remove the 1st rear axle, release the drive shafts on the input (13) and output (20) flanges, and, to remove the 2nd rear axle, release only the drive shaft on the input flange (21).

Assemble the drive shafts, watching the original marking.

16

Remove the screws (5) from the shaft securing the upper strut (6)

Release the upper strut only from the bracket of the axle to be removed.
