Disassemble

Considering that the rear springs have a crucial importance in the vehicle's behavior, we suggest that their maintenance is carried out always in pairs, in both springs of the same axle.

1

Remove the rear springs from the respective axles.

Pay attention to the original assemblage position of the springs so that they can be installed in the same position. The friction ends are different.

2

Fasten the spring to be disassembled in a vise

3

Remove the nut (3) and the king bolt (2)

Insert a long rod in the master bolt place to remove the leaves one at a time.

4

Remove from both sides of the spring the nuts (6), the bolts (5) and remove the clamps (4).

5

Remove the leaves starting by the greatest (7) and finishing at the smallest leave (17).

Clean

6

Clean well all the spring's components

The longitudinal grooves and saliences of the leaves (7), (8) and (9) those of the ends must be well clean.

The leaves must not be cleaned with water jets or acids. Dry clean them, and if they present rust, remove it with a thin steel brush.

Check

7

Check the condition of all leaves.

Replace the:

Worn, cracked, dented or deformed leaves

The leaves (7), (8) and (9) with deformed salience, recesses and curvatures must also be replaced.

When the self-locking nuts (3) and (6) are removed they must be replaced.

King bolt (2), replace it, if necessary.

8

Check the closing pieces of the clamps riveted in the leaf (13) and the condition of the clamps.

Clamps, replace them if necessary.

Assemble

9

Lubricate the leaves with grease all over its surface and assemble them one on the other in the correct position.

Use as guide a rod of the same diameter of the king bolt (2), in such a way that it can be fastened to a vise for the assemblage of the spring in the work position.

10

Assemble the spring in the work position, starting from the smaller leaf (17) up to the upper final leaf.

Pay attention during the assemblage of the upper leaves. In the ends, the curvatures, saliences and recesses must be perfectly fitted.

11

With the spring totally aligned, assemble the clamps (4), the bolts (5) and tighten the nuts (6) normally.

12

Remove the rod and assemble a new king bolt (2), with a new self-locking nut (3).

Take care not to knead the king bolt's head which will be fitted in the spring support.

13

Tighten the self-locking nut (3) up to the specified torque.

If necessary, fasten the king bolt's head (2) in order to tighten the nut (3). Protect the cheeks with copper or aluminum plates.

14

Clean the excess grease on the leaves

If the spring remains in the stock, put an adhesive tape on the bolt's head or an appropriate protective plug.

15

Install the rear spring in the respective axle.

Pay attention to the correct assemblage position of the spring with regard to the friction stoppers.
