Warning | Risk of injury. Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.
Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
Warning | Risk of burn injuries, suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. | Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the hazard area.
Warning | Risk of injury. Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components.
Topical note | Notes on avoiding damage through contamination and foreign objects
| Remove/install | ||
1 | Bring engine to operating temperature (approx. 80 °C). | Carry out compression test only if the engine is at normal operating temperature.
2 | Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).
3 | Remove glow plugs of cylinders 1 to 4 (R9/1 to R9/4).
4 | Connect compression pressure recorder.
Compression tester | |||
5 | Turn engine for approx. 5 seconds. | to remove combustion residues from the cylinders.
Compression tester | |||
6 | Screw in screw-in piece (3) with installed check valve into the glow plug hole of the cylinder to be checked. | Screw-in fitting
7 | Connect compression recorder (1) to screw-in piece (3). | Compression tester
Screw-in fitting | |||
| Check | ||
8 | Turn engine until no further pressure rise can be observed on the compression recorder (1). | Compression tester
9 | Carry out testing procedure in the cylinder order on the remaining cylinders in the same way.
10 | Compare measured pressure readings with the specified test values. | Compression pressure, permissible difference between the cylinders
Wear limit or limit value of compression pressure
Installation tolerance or new value of compression pressure
If the minimum pressure is not reached or the permissible pressure difference between the individual cylinders is exceeded,
| |||
Check cylinder leakage.
11 | Install in the reverse order. |
