1 Boost pressure regulator valve (Wastegate)
2 Turbine wheel
3 Compressor turbine wheel
4 Exhaust manifold
5 Turbocharger
A Clean air
B Charge air
C Exhaust
Location
The turbocharger is located directly at the engine exhaust manifold.
Task
The turbocharger compresses the intake air, whereby the degree of filling of the cylinder increases and thus the engine torque increases.
Function
The turbine wheel is displaced by the flow of the exhaust gas into a rotary movement. The speed may be briefly up to
approx. 200,000 rpm.
The compressor turbine wheel, driven across the common shaft by turbine wheel, is located in the turbocharger compressor housing, and draws in clean air via the compressor inlet and feeds this to the compression chambers under pressure.
Due to the high speed, pressure is generated on the compressor side. The boost pressure control valve is installed to limit the pressure to a maximum pressure
A turbocharger driven under full load should be allowed to run for a few seconds in idle before the engine is switched off to prevent excessive wear at the bearing points.
