Remove/install lower oil reservoir cover

Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Conduct a road test

 Switch on the retarder several times during the road test in order to bring the oil to operating temperature.



Remove

Switch off ignition

The vehicle must be horizontal and the retarder oil must be at operating temperature for checking the oil level.

Remove drain screw for oil reservoir (1)

 Collect oil in a suitable container and allow to drain completely.

Remove bolts (4)

Detach lower oil reservoir cover (2)



Install

Install lower oil reservoir cover (2)

 Renew gasket (3) and bolts (4). Pay attention to the correct installation position of the gasket (3) relative to the lower oil reservoir cover (2).

Tighten screws (4)

 Observe the tightening sequence.

Screw drain screw into oil reservoir (1)

 On the version with integral plastic sealing ring the drain screw (1) must be replaced in event of a damaged plastic sealing ring.

Replace the copper sealing ring on the version with copper sealing ring.

Pour oil into the retarder



Conduct a road test

 Bleed retarder:

- If present and possible: Switch off retarder-

foot control.

-Drive vehicle at 50 km/h.

- Switch on retarder in first brake stage 5 times

for approx. 5 s each time.
