Bleed brake system

12.02.16

Vehicle 979.0

Preliminary steps

1

Place the vehicle at an appropriate safe location.

Chock the wheels to prevent unintentional movement. It applies when an appropriate device (lift) is not used.

Danger!

Follow the safety measures for the vehicle.

2

The purgers are located at the brake calipers on the front and rear wheels. The brake fluid is located at the lower left portion of the dashboard, inside a small compartment closed by a rubber cover.

3

In addition to being very time-consuming, purging the system with the help of the pedal does not provide satisfactory practical results. For this reason, we recommend doing it using an appropriate brake testing and purging device.

Danger!

Observe the safety instructions for the brake fluid

Purging

4

Open the front left driver's door and, on the side, at the dashboard height, turn both latches using an appropriate blade, and remove the brake fluid reservoir cover.

The blade should have the thickness of the slit on the latches, to avoid damaging the material.

Danger!

The maximum pressure supported by the brake fluid reservoir is 3 bar, and the purging pressure is 1 bar.

While purging, if the system is under pressure and the purger is closed, the clutch or the brake pedal cannot be activated.

It is important to be aware of these values and procedures before purging the brakes.

5

Remove the cover and connect the purging device to the reservoir nozzle.

Actuate the purging device supplied with the respective 1-bar pressure.

Use the appropriate tools

6

Start purging from the rear wheels.

The brake fluid should not be reused. Collect the fluid in a suitable container and dispose of it ecologically according to the applicable regulations.

7

Apply pressure in the system. At one of the rear wheels, open the purger least by 45° and let the brake fluid out until no air bubbles are present in the purging tube.

If a complete purge is performed and brake fluid remains in the reservoir, it should be forced out by continuing the purge procedure until the minimum level is reached, so that new fluid can be filled into the system.

During the purging operation, the reservoir content should not run under the "minimum" level:

In this case, refill the reservoir to the "normal" level, using the specified brake fluid.

8

Close the purger, remove the clear tube. Confirm the re-tightening of the purger and install a rubber protector.

9

Repeat the procedure for the rear wheel on the opposite side, then for the front wheels.

If you wish to purge the clutch by leveraging the installed device, see: Purging the air from the clutch drive using a device.

10

Relieve the pressure from the device.

11

Remove the hose and the container. Finally tighten the purger and install the rubber cap.

12

Remove the purging device.

If necessary, refill the reservoir to the "normal" level, using the specified brake fluid. Do not overfill with fluid, because it will spill inside the vehicle cab.

13

Check the tightness of the system and purgers.
