Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified

Phased in as of 19.01.04

 The oil filler screws and oil drain screws should always be replaced after being unscrewed.

The new oil filler screws and drain screws as well as the tapped holes must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and provided with a special sealing compound.

 Only carry out oil level check at interior temperature.

Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

Remove twelve-point collar nut (40) from rear axle shaft (37)

 To prevent wheel bearing damage the vehicle must not be moved on its wheels anymore with the twelve-point collar nut (40) released.

Remove rear wheel



Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary

Remove fixed brake caliper (111) from the rear axle

 Bind fixed brake caliper (111) securely to body

 Bolt, fixed brake caliper (111) to wheel carrier (7)

Remove stabilizer bar link rod (6k)

 Nut, link rod (6k) to stabilizer bar

 Bolt, connecting rod to wheel carrier

Unscrew left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear rpm sensor from wheel carrier (7)



Remove torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut

Self-locking nut, torque strut (3) to wheel carrier (7)

Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7).

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut

Detach tie rod (4) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut

Remove thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear-axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the nut

Fold wheel carrier (7) outwards and simultaneously press the rear axle shaft (37) out of the rear axle shaft flange

 Do not overstretch brake cable (arrow) in order to guarantee satisfactory function. Do not damage the boots of the rear axle shaft (37) and the pulse ring for the left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) in order to prevent malfunctions of the ESP.

 Fold back wheel carrier (7) and tie up securely.

Pull rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle differential

 Do not damage radial sealing ring in rear axle housing in order to avoid leaks.

Checking

Check radial sealing ring in rear axle housing for condition

 If the radial sealing ring is damaged or leaky, see: 

Replacing radial sealing ring of rear axle shaft (37) in rear axle housing

Install in the reverse order

Check oil level in rear axle differential and correct if necessary

 Mixing of old universal hypoid gear oil and the new FE hypoid gear oil should be avoided due to the better fuel economy.
