1 | Fasten spreader tool (01) using bolts (4s) to rear axle housing (1). |
2 | Gradually spread rear axle housing (1) by turning the threaded rod (5) on the spreader tool (01) only until the differential (6) can be inserted without the use of any force. |
The rear axle housing (1) must not be spread too far apart. |
3 | Insert differential (6) with determined spacer washers (3) and tapered roller bearing shells (2) into rear axle housing (1). |
The chamfered side of the spacer washers (3) must face towards the rear axle housing (1). |
4 | Insert bearing bracket and position using rubber hammer. |
Observe markings on bearing brackets, to ensure that the original installation position is restored. |
5 | Tighten screws/bolts of bearing brackets to specified torque . |

6 | Mount dial indicator (04) onto dial indicator holder and mount dial indicator holder onto face of rear axle housing (1). |
7 | Check gear backlash. |
The check pin of the dial indicator (04) must be at a right angle to the tooth flank on the ring gear (7). |
Determine gear backlash by turning ring gear (7) to and fro. |
Repeat the process at at least 4 tooth flanks equally spaced around the ring gear (7). |
8 | Adjust gear backlash. |
The gear backlash can be adjusted by using various spacer washers. If a thinner spacer washer is installed on one side, a spacer washer which is thicker by the same amount must be installed on the opposite side so that the preload of the differential housing bearing is retained. |
9 | Compare measured play with specified gear backlash value and install different spacer washers if necessary. |
