Remove

Remove propeller shaft of front axle differential.

Drain oil from transfer case (1).

Attach retainer wrench with 2 screws to joint flange (3).

 Retainer wrench

Counterhold joint flange (3) with retainer wrench and remove screw (4).

Remove retainer wrench from joint flange (3).

Position screw (4) again and screw in 4 turns.

Loosen joint flange (3) with puller up to end stop of screw (4).

Remove screw (4) and remove joint flange (3) from transfer case (1).

Remove radial shaft sealing ring (2) using a suitable tool.


Do not damage seat of radial shaft sealing ring (2) in the transfer case (1).
Leakage will otherwise occur.



Check

Check seat of radial shaft sealing ring (2) for damage and galling.

If damage or galling is visible,



replace transfer case (1).

Check joint flange (3) for damage and galling.

If damage or galling is visible,



replace joint flange (3).



Install

Coat sealing lip of new radial shaft sealing ring (2) with transmission oil.



Transmission oils (specification 235.1)

Position new radial shaft sealing ring (2) in opening.

Press in new radial shaft sealing ring (2) using drift, until the drift makes contact with the housing.

Grease teeth of joint flange (3) until the tooth spaces are filled.

Position joint flange (3) on transfer case (1).

Attach retainer wrench with 2 screws to joint flange (3).

Counterhold joint flange (3) with retainer wrench and screw in new screw (4).

Remove retainer wrench from joint flange (3).

Fill transfer case (1) with oil.

Install propeller shaft of front axle differential.

 Install center and bottom rear engine compartment lining only after function and leak test.

 Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Perform engine test run and check transfer case (1) for proper operation and leak tightness.

Install center and rear lower engine compartment lining.
