 Caution

Risk of injury to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing engine oil

Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

Remove

Remove low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation cooler.

Remove cylinder head cover.

Adjust

Turn engine at belt pulley/vibration damper with counterholder in direction of engine rotation and set piston of cylinder 1to top dead center (ignition TDC).


The engine must not be turned back.
The timing chain can skip otherwise and cause engine damage.

 The 0° marking on belt pulley/vibration damper must align with the marking on the crankcase.

Mount hold-down tool (7a) of the intake camshaft (1a).

 If necessary turn engine at belt pulley/vibration damper with  counterholder.

Mount hold-down tool (7b) of the exhaust camshaft (1b).

 If necessary turn engine at belt pulley/vibration damper with  counterholder.

Tighten screws (6) of hold-down tools(7a,7b) on cylinder head.

Loosen screw (2a).

 Screw/bolt (2) has left-hand thread.

Loosen screw (2b).

Install retaining lock for crankshaft.

Unscrew bolt (2a).

Screw in screw (2a) and tighten.

 Install new screw (2a).

 Screw/bolt, camshaft sprocket to camshaft

Remove screw(2b).

Screw in screw (2) and tighten.

 Replace screw (2b).

 Screw/bolt, camshaft sprocket to camshaft

Remove screws (6) and remove hold-down tool (7a, 7b).

Check

Remove locating pin.

Turn engine with retaining lock in the direction of engine rotation through two revolutions.


The engine must not be turned back.
The timing chain can skip otherwise and cause engine damage.

 The markings (arrow) on the intake camshaft (1a) and exhaust camshaft (1b) must match the markings (arrow) on the camshaft housing (5).

Insert locating pin.

Install hold-down tools (7a, 7b).

 Check for correct seating of the hold-down tools (7a, 7b).

repeat adjustment procedure if necessary.
