A Free play in steering as measured at circumference

	Check
	Steering play
 Danger!	Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns when working in engine during starting procedure	Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.	AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
1	Start engine and turn front wheels to straightahead position
2	Check play (A) at steering wheel	 Turn steering wheel alternately to the left and right until the front wheels move. If the permissible steering play, measured at the circumference of the steering wheel, is exceeded: 	*BE46.00-N-1001-01D
		Check steering gear and all steering transmission components for undesirable play - as a separate repair order.
	Steering linkage
3	Check tie rods (6, 7, 8), pitman arm (2) and steering idler arm (3) for damage and correct mounting	 Check that the cotter pins (5) are undamaged and firmly seated. If damage / defects are found in the steering linkage: 
		Repair damage / defects - as a separate repair order.
4	Check rubber boots (4) on tie rod ends	 Carefully check to make sure that the entire surface of each rubber boot and the folds resulting from the installation position are undamaged. Check that the rubber boots are securely fitted to the seating surface of the associated arm.  Do not replace damaged or leaking rubber boots! Replace the relevant ball joint or the entire tie rod if necessary - as a separate repair order.
5	Check the tie rod ends for play one by one	 Pull and push firmly by hand in the axial direction of the ball pin. There must be no noticeable play in the radial direction. If the permissible play in the axial direction is exceeded 	*BE46.00-N-1002-01D
		Replace relevant tie rod ends - as a separate repair order.
