SI42.45-P-0001A | Service information on conversion of electronic stability program (ESP) | 18.3.98 |
MODEL 168 up to 19.12.97
The ESP retrofit applies for all vehicles from the start of production up to chassis number 016 125. All retrofitted vehicles are equivalent to the vehicles with factory-installed EPS
(code 472a) in terms of repair and diagnosis.
The HHT module model 168 is valid as of 03/98.
A separate wiring diagram has been completed for vehicles up to chassis number 016 125.

Electronic stability program (ESP)
The electronic stability program (ESP) cannot be switched off on model 168.
ESP improves the driving stability and traction in all driving situations.
Vehicle oversteer and understeer is counteracted by limiting the engine torque and applying the wheel brakes. During operation the ESP warning lamp (A1e41) in the instrument cluster flashes.
The engine torque control can be switched off with the ASR OFF switch (S6/2s8) on the center console.
To switch off the engine torque control press the ASR OFF switch at the top. This is possible in the speed range from 10 km/h to 60 km/h. The ESP warning lamp in the instrument cluster then burns continuously.
To return to normal driving operation press the ASR switch at the bottom. The ESP warning lamp (A1e41) in the instrument cluster goes out and the engine torque control is again ready for operation.
The traction control continues to operate when a wheel reaches the traction limit, e.g. when the road is slippery on one side. The brake on the wheel affected can then be applied to increase the traction.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After reaching a speed of approx. 60 km/h the engine torque control switches back on. The ESP warning lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.
The ESP warning lamp (A1e41) in the instrument cluster flashes at all speeds when the tires reach the traction limit; in such cases it is not possible to switch off the engine torque control.

BAS control module (N48)
(Brake assist)
The brake assist helps to shorten the braking path during emergency braking maneuvers. The advantages of the anti-lock brake system (ABS) are fully utilized by the brake assist feature.
When the brake pedal is depressed very quickly the maximum braking force is applied. If it is necessary to continue the braking maneuver, do not reduce the force applied to the pedal by the foot. If the brake pedal is released the brake assist (BAS) switches off.
The normal power brake feature remains available coinciding with the pressure applied to the pedal.

Wiring harness on converted vehicles
The ESP wiring harness on converted vehicles can be connected to the old standard wiring harness in the control module box with an adapter (500) and fastened with a cable strap (arrow). Part of the old wiring harness is no longer used and can be tied back in the vehicle.
Modified roof load
The permissible roof load is limited to 50 kg.
The Alustyle and Leanlin basic roof top carrier systems are available with order no.: B6 6 84 8330 / B6 6 85 0020.
Only the load specifications on the rating plate as well as in the operating instructions have been changed accordingly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The current rating plate with 50 kg will be available immediately for gluing over the previously valid rating plate and the modified operating instructions will be available immediately for the roof top carriers already delivered.
Parking brake
A hand-operated parking brake is used which is equipped with a mechanically adjustable length compensation for the cable.
