Modification notes
Note
On the basis of the different statements and information provided by our customers and the body manufacturers we would like to provide you with the following information regarding the above-mentioned topic.
The PTO may only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary or, in a moving vehicle, when in 1., 2. or 3. gear only.
If the PTO is on, gear changes may not be made when the vehicle is moving.
This information is clearly stated in the owner's manual in the chapter "Vehicle operation", section "Power take-off", under the title "Transmission-driven power take-off".
Technical reason
The synchronizer ring surface has been designed for a uniform mass, which is to be accelerated or decelerated, with the aim of achieving a long service life.
If however, the transmission is shifted during a journey (shifting gear) and the PTO is active, the mass is increased and the synchronizer ring service life may be shortened.
This also applies to vehicles in which the PTO is separated from the body (e.g. refuse body) by means of a magnetic clutch or similar component.
Non observance of this reference may lead to premature wear of the synchronizer ring and a subsequent cost-intensive reconditioning of the transmission .
