Risk of skin or eye injury caused by high-pressure spills of the retarder's oil | Only carry out works when the retarder is disconnected. When working with the retarder still too hot, use protective gloves, clothing and glasses. | |
1 | Place the auxiliary brake control lever in the position "0" | ||
2 | Turn off the ignition | ||
3 | Remove the cover/step plate over the gear box | Only in semi-tow vehicles. | |
4 | Remove the closing plug (1) | ||
5 | Remove the 2/2-way valve (2) | Do not use the impact wrench for loosening it. | |
The valve body will be removed together with the screw-in plug. Should the valve body get stuck in the retarder housing: | |||
Remove the body of the 2/2-way valve from the retarder housing (2). | |||

6 | Check the valve piston (6) position | Should the valve piston (6) get stuck, replace the 2/2-way valve. | |
7 | Check the 2/2-way valve (2) for signs of corrosion | If there are signs of corrosion, replace the 2/2-way valve (2). | |
| Install | ||
8 | Install the threaded plug in the valve body | Only if the threaded plug is free from the valve body. | |
The threaded plug safety ring must fit into the groove inside the valve body. | |||
9 | Install the 2/2-way valve (2) in the retarder housing | Do not use the impact wrench to install the 2/2-way valve (2). | |
Replace and lightly grease the sealing ring (5) and the O-Rings (3, 4). | |||

10 | Install the closing plug (1) | ||
11 | Install the cover/step plate over the gear box | Only in semi-tow vehicles. |
