| Important preliminary information and measures | All personal safety recommendations to avoid accidents and all environment protection regulations must always be complied with. | |
refer to: General information on parking brake.
Parking brake linings are glued to brake shoes by the manufacturer. Brake shoe and lining is supplied as a single unit
1 | Place the vehicle on flat and level ground that permits working safely. Chock the front wheels to prevent unintentional rolling of the vehicle | This in the case of no availability of an appropriate lift or pit.
2 | Disconnect the master switch Besides the master switch we also recommend to detach the battery leads, due to the danger of starting the engine with the transmission shaft detached | As we are dealing with electronic management vehicles, always follow the recommendations for this type of vehicle.
Danger! | Danger at detaching the transmission shaft at the rear universal joint of the parking brake drum | Danger of serious personal and material accidents. With the transmission shaft detached, if the engine starts accidentally and the gearbox is shifted in gear, serious damages will occur on the vehicle and the transmission shaft will be irreparably damaged.
3 | Mark the position of the flange (3) on the brake drum (1) to maintain the balance of the transmission shaft assembly, of the drum and of the transmission flange. | The brake drum is positioned by the bolt (5), always maintaining the same position in relation to the flange (7).
4 | Remove the bolts (2) and detach the transmission shaft (3). Move aside the transmission shaft and protect the universal joint. | The transmission shaft is balanced as an assembly, therefore it should not be separated at the front end splines. Should this become necessary under any circumstances, it is necessary to mark the original assembly position to be installed again in exactly the same place. As a safety measure, in case of doubt, balance the complete transmission shaft.
5 | Remove the bolt (5) working as brake drum guide. Remove the brake drum (1) | The flange (7) must not be removed due to the fact that it is linked with the adjustment of the pinion (20) with the crown, the same occurs with the plate (4) assembly, which to be removed, needs the removal of the pinion's (20) nut and the flange. If the crown gear and pinion are disassembled, the assembly comprising the plate (4) can be disassembled normally, however it will need to be compulsorily assembled and the bolts tightened before assembling the pinion and the crown.
All removing and installing operations of the plate (4) components in the assembly will have to be carried out with the flange (7) installed.
6 | Turn the crown of the adjusting bolt (8) to completely close the shoes (19)
7 | Remove the washers (11) on the two shoes. Remove the side retention springs (13) | The pin s (12) remain fastened in the plate.
8 | With appropriate pliers, remove the spring of the adjusting bolt (10), remove the crown (8) with the bolt (9). At the top part remove the shoes (14) anchorage spring and the retention spring (15). | Pay attention to the springs assembly position in order not to invert them at assembly.
9 | Remove the shoes (19) from the plate (4).
10 | Remove the latch (23) from the traction cable sheath and release the cable from the support. Loosen the hook (22) from the actuation lever (17). | Do not force nor twist the traction cable end.
11 | Remove the two bolts (24) Remove the plate (25) and the protector (26) from the actuation lever (17)
| CLEAN | ||
12 | Thoroughly clean all parking brake components. | The cleaning will have to be dry without utilizing liquid solvents or byproducts. Clean the plate (4), all springs, side retaining parts, the actuation lever (17) and their contours. Clean the adjustment crown (8) and the bolt (9). Clean the shoes anchor (16). Clean the brake drum and sand the braking surface with crocus cloth.
| Check: | ||
13 | Check the components for condition. | Replace if necessary:
Check and measure the drum inside diameter “D1” and the other measurements, if necessary, replace it or machine it.
Replace the brake shoes (19).
Check all springs and the crown with the brake shoe adjusting bolt, replace them if necessary. Check and replace if necessary, the protector (17) and the protector of the brake shoes external adjustment opening.
| Recommendations on lubrication | ||
The brake friction parts such as linings and drum must be clean and thoroughly free of any type of lubricant or byproduct. Brake linings, once contaminated, are to be unconditionally replaced. | However, other brake parts where there is friction, such as spring hooks, adjusting bolts, shoes anchor, lever actuation and cable hook, are to be lightly lubricated.
The above mentioned lubrication will have to be applied at assembly, always utilizing recommended long lasting grease. The application will have to be in minimum quantities, without any possibility of it contaminating the brake friction parts. Always wipe clean any lubricant rests around the components to avoid its propagation towards braking areas.
| Installing | ||
14 | Lightly lubricate the contact parts and install the new brake shoes (19) with the linings, the crown (8) with the adjusting bolt (9), the retention spring (15) installed from the inside of the shoes at the top part and the adjusting bolt spring (10). | Lightly lubricate the friction parts of the spring hooks and the adjusting bolt.
15 | Install the anchorage spring (14) installed from brake shoe outside
16 | On the brake shoes, pull the side retention pins (12), install the side retention springs (13) and fit the seat washers (11) so they remain locked on the pins
17 | Install anew rubber protector (boot) (26) on the actuation lever (17) and install the protector's retention plate (25). Install and tighten the two bolts with cylindrical head and internal hex (24) | The protector will have to be fitting normally without folding or forced.
18 | If necessary, install a new protection bellows (boot) on the end of the traction cable
19 | Confirm that the actuation lever on the ratchet completely lowered (released brake). Lightly lubricate and install the hook (22) in the actuation lever (17) | Take care with the traction cable (21) and with the sheath.
20 | Install the traction cable terminal in the support integrated in the plate (4) and install the catch (23) | After installing the traction cable definitely fit the protection boot.
21 | Install the brake drum (1) and fasten it with the bolt (5)
| Care with the balance | In the case the transmission shaft is or has been dismantled and there are doubts on its initial position, the most correct is to carry out a complete balancing. | |
22 | Assemble the transmission shaft so the marking made on (3) at disassembly coincides with the marking on the drum (1). Install the bolts (2) and tighten them lightly crosswise and equally for the normal accommodation of the flange | Finally the same way, alternately and crosswise, apply the final specified tightening.
23 | With the traction cable in normal condition, the new brake shoes at standard adjustment measurement, the traction cable's “C” measurement can be checked | This measurement is only valid with new brake shoes and the linings at thickness “G” with the standard diameter “D” controlled with a new drum.
24 | Adjust the brake shoes | Adjustment: Carry out brake shoe adjustment through the backplate holes. 1- With a screwdriver turn the crown (8) of the adjusting bolt clockwise until the brake drum (1) becomes locked. 2- Return the adjuster fro 4 to 5 teeth. In the cab, actuate the lever on the ratchet to the second notch, the drum must be free.
3- Actuate the lever to the 4th or 5th notch, the drum will have to be locked. 4- If necessary carry out a new adjustment.
25 | Connect the battery leads Turn on the master switch | As we are dealing with electronic management vehicles, always follow the recommendations for this type of vehicle.
26 | Take the vehicle for test-drive and check the parking brake for behavior and especially the transmission shaft
27 | Remind the customer that after the accommodation of the brake linings, if the actuation lever in the cab raises beyond normal. a new adjustment will have to be carried out |
