| Removing and installing | ||
| Important information and preliminary measures | ||
The struts keep the rear axles alignment relative to the front axle. The left-hand and right-hand sides of the vehicle are determined to be the same sides of a person sitting in the driver's seat, in the driving position. On each rear axle, two longitudinal struts are mounted, one fixed and one adjustable. The driving shaft is installed with a fixed strut (2) on the left-hand side of the vehicle and the adjustable strut (1) goes on the left-hand side, unlike the 3rd auxiliary axle, which is installed with the fixed strut (2) on the left-hand side, and the adjustable strut (1) is installed on the right-hand side.
When assembling, the adjustable strut (1) should be adjusted with the basic dimension "A" corresponding to the distance between the center of the sleeves and equal to the fixed strut (2) dimension. Thus, the axle is virtually aligned. After assembly, check and, if necessary, adjust the parallelism of the axles using an alignment device. First, align the driving shaft (6), then the auxiliary 3rd axle.
Danger! | Danger to life if the vehicle slips or falls from the lift | Place the vehicle on an appropriate lift, so that the wheels of the front axle and the rear drive and driven axle remain safely supported on the support plates of the lift, at the lifting points determined by the vehicle manufacturer.
Do not lift the vehicle by supporting the jack at the center of the axles.
1 | Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn the main switch off | Disconnect the ground cable of the battery by loosening its end secured to the chassis frame. Avoid disconnecting the end of the ground cable attached to the battery post.
2 | Lift the vehicle, support it on trestles by the stringers, in front of and behind the axles, so the struts can be removed | Further care should be taken when lifting the vehicle of the vehicle is loaded. The vehicle should not be lifted from one side only, leaving the opposite wheel on the ground. The vehicle should be lifted evenly from both sides.
| Remove the struts | ||
3 | If necessary, remove the wheels | Removing the wheels makes accessing the struts (1, 2) fastening point easier, but removing the struts is also possible without removing the wheels.
4 | Remove the self-locking nuts (5), with flat washers (3) and screws (4), and remove the adjustable strut (1) and the fixed strut (2) | Before removing the struts (1, 2), note and mark the original position of the screws and the corresponding self-locking nuts (5) to install them in the same position.
5 | Remove the adjustable strut, loosen the nuts (15), from the screws (14) and remove the threaded terminals (12). | Remove the adjustable strut (1) only if required.
| Check | ||
6 | Inspect the components on the adjustable strut (1) and fixed strut (2) | Check and replace: _ When there are signs of ovality, corrosion or changes to the internal diameter _ When the sleeves (11) are deformed _ Adjustable strut deformed at the central part, the threaded terminals (12) and the threads
7 | Replace the sleeves (11) of the adjustable strut (1) or the fixed strut (2)
Centering dimension "B" (on both sides, to center the sleeves
| Install the struts | ||
8 | Install the threaded terminal (12) on the adjustable strut (1) together with the screw (14) and nut (15), press lightly without locking the thread and adjust the strut (1) per dimension "A" | Only if the adjustable strut (1) has been removed:
Clean the threads of the threaded terminals (12), lubricate them with a light lubricant coat to prevent oxidation of the threads.
Dimension "A" corresponds to the length of the fixed strut (2), which can be taken as a reference.
9.1 | Install the fixed strut (2), insert the screws (4) with flat washers (3) and tighten the self-locking nuts (5) | On the drive axle (6), the fixed strut (2) is installed on the right-hand side of the vehicle and, on the 3rd auxiliary axle, on the left-hand side. Mount the screws (4) and nuts (5) exactly at their previous position, as identified before while disassembling.
| |||
9.2 | Install the adjustable strut (1), insert the screws (4) with flat washers (3) and tighten the self-locking nuts (5). | On the drive axle (6), the adjustable strut (1) is installed on the left-hand side of the vehicle and, on the 3rd auxiliary axle, on the right-hand side. Mount the screws and nuts at their previous positions, as identified before when disassembling.
| |||
10 | Install the vehicle wheels, remove the trestles and lower the vehicle
11 | Check the alignment of the drive axle (6) using an appropriate device | Before aligning the rear axles, checking and, if necessary, adjusting the steering geometry are advisable
First, adjust the alignment of the drive axle (6), then the alignment of the auxiliary 3rd shaft.
12 | To adjust the drive axle (6) alignment: Loosen the nuts (15) from the screws (14) and, using a wrench into the socket (13) of the central rod of the adjustable strut (1), turn the central tod until you get the correct alignment indicated by the aligning device | Warning: When adjusting the drive axle (6) alignment, the central rod of the adjustable strut (1) should be rotated a little beyond the required set point, then returned to the correct set point, so as to relieve the stress exerted on the clamping bushes (11). At this point, we note that the central rod of the adjustable strut can be rotated without much effort.
13 | Repeating the same adjustment procedures, check and adjust the alignment of the 3rd auxiliary axle (7)
14 | After aligning the rear drive axle (6) and the 3rd auxiliary axle (7), tighten the self-locking nuts (14) at the terminals of the struts (1) to the specified tightening torque
15 | Conduct a test drive and check the vehicle behavior |
