Remove/install

 Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.

Wear acid-resistant gloves and clothing and safety glasses with side guards.

Do not place any conductive objects on the battery and avoid any short circuit from battery positive to ground.

Only fill liquid battery electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

Detach cover on front face of engine in front of the air filter

Mount engine support bracket and raise engine slightly

Remove lower engine compartment paneling

Remove right and left front axle shaft (60)

Remove intermediate shaft (34)

Mark front axle gear propeller shaft (70) in relation to front axle gear flange

Detach front axle gear propeller shaft (70) from front axle gear flange

 Installation: Observe marking.



Tie front axle gear propeller shaft (70) to one side.

Remove brake hose bracket left and right on C-bracket (40e)

Detach suspension strut (40) at top of C-bracket (40e)



Unscrew torsion bar (10) on left and right of link rods



Detach high pressure and return line of rack-and-pinion steering from the front axle carrier (1)

 The three brackets are located on the left side.

Remove retaining panel (1h) of rack-and-pinion steering



Pull rack-and-pinion steering slightly backwards and tie in place

Detach the left and right engine mount at the bottom of the front axle carrier (1)

Remove bolts (1f) of front axle carrier (1).

 Installation: The bolts (1f) are self-tapping, so the following points must be observed:

 Never retap the thread in the side member

 Replace screws (1f).

 Use only original bolts (4 x)

 Do not insert bolts (1f) at an incline
when turning in

 Do not use an impact bolt tightener

 Observe tightening torque

 Installation: Before tightening the bolts (1f) align the front axle carrier (1) on the left and right using a suitable drift (057). After this, insert rubber plugs.



Lower front axle carrier

 Secure front axle carrier against falling

Detach exhaust shielding plate (69) for propeller shaft front axle gear

 Collar bolt, mounting support for front axle gear (58) to front axle gear (50) and engine mount carrier

Detach mounting support of front axle gear (58)



Insert drift into radial sealing ring on outside right of front axle gear (50)

 To prevent transmission fluid from escaping from the hole during removal.



Detach front axle gear (50) and remove

 Five bolts from the left and two from the right.

 Ensure that no transmission oil escapes.



Install in the reverse order

Check front axle transmission oil level and top up if necessary

Perform basic programming
